March 3: National Cold Cuts Day: --
Dagwood will eat his heart out today because today it's National
Cold Cuts Day. Call them lunch meats, deli meats, sandwich meats,
or cold cuts. Some like them thick, while others stack them a mile
high. Others still just like them with cheese and crackers.
However you like them, National Cold Cuts Day was made for
sandwich and snack makers. There are the deli staples like the
humble turkey and ham. Then there are the culinary delights like
salami and prosciutto and flavors that require a more acquired
taste like head cheese and braunschweiger. Whatever your taste,
there is a cold cut for everyone. Well, everyone except the
vegetarian. Every nationality has a flavor all its own when it
comes to seasoning, curing, and aging a variety of meats. Spices,
smoking, and time alter the taste. When the animal is butchered,
temperature and air circulation affect the flavor, too. It's
essentially an art history lesson all rolled into one, and at the
end of it all, there's mouth-watering food that can be enjoyed
with friends and a good beverage. Or, it's merely a piece of meat
meant to make a meal. Breaking bread with friends sounds so much
more delightful, though. Bologna is one of the most popular cold
cuts in the United States due to a famous commercial. Named after
the Italian city of the same name, bologna is similar to an
Italian sausage called Mortadella. Other popular cuts are chicken,
roast beef, pastrami, corned beef, and pepperoni. So visit a local
deli for your favorite cold cuts. With so many options, be sure to
try something new. Challenge friends to a sandwich-making contest.

March 3: Global Omega-3 Day: -- Omega-3s
(O-3s) are beneficial fatty acid nutrients found in every cell,
and EPA and DHA omega-3s, found in marine sources, play a vital
role in heart, brain, and eye health and in supporting a healthy
pregnancy. 80% of people worldwide receive less than enough EPA
and DHA omega-3s, so Global Omega-3 Day was created to highlight
these health benefits. Global Omega-3 Day was established by the
Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED), a member
organization of companies all along the EPA and DHA omega-3 supply
chain, from fisheries to finished product brands. Nutrition
science and interest in nutrients for disease prevention is a
relatively recent area of study originating in the early- to
mid-1900s. Interest in omega-3s skyrocketed after researchers Hans
Olaf Bang and Jorn Dyerberg published their landmark papers in the
1970s on the high-fat diet (mainly fish and whale blubber) of
Indigenous Greenlanders and their remarkably low rates of heart
attack. Since then, more than 50,000 published research papers
have discussed the topic of EPA and DHA omega-3s - the
longer-chain omega-3 fats found in fatty fish most closely
associated with numerous health benefits - and more than 4,500
human clinical trials have been conducted. Yet, most people are
still not getting enough of these nutrients. That's why GOED
created Global Omega-3 Day - to highlight these vital nutrients
and help people worldwide understand why they need more EPA and
DHA omega-3s. Companies, health professionals, and people
worldwide are encouraged to discuss the importance of omega-3s and
share how to get more EPA and DHA omega-3s. On Sale @ 15% Off

March 3: International Irish Whiskey Day:
-- A day dedicated to the world-renowned whiskey type - Irish
whiskey. Do you know that it has been more than 800 years since
Irish whiskey emerged for the first time? Irish whiskey, as the
name suggests, is whiskey produced in Ireland, and it is known for
its smooth texture and quality. It is a favorite of whiskey lovers
all over the world. International Irish Whiskey Day is said to be
the idea of writer and editor Stuart McNamara. Stuart wanted
people to recognize the value of Irish whiskey and appreciate its
historical significance, production quality, and exotic smooth
taste. In Irish, 'uisce beatha' translates to 'water of life.' It
is said the word 'whiskey' originated from this Irish phrase. It
is believed that Irish whiskey became immensely popular in Europe
in the twelfth century. The story goes on to say that it was the
Irish monks who learned the method of distilling spirits from
other countries in Europe and brought back the teachings. This
method was further developed and thus edible spirits were created.
Irish whiskey is traditionally made in a pot. Sir Thomas Phillips'
Bushmill in Antrim, which many say is the oldest distillery in the
world, got the license to distill whiskey in 1608. It was
sanctioned by King James. The distillery received the license to
trade in 1757, which also made it the first distillery to trade in
Ireland. The law that allowed potato, sugar, and grain to be added
in the making of Irish whiskey came in 1759. Ireland soon became
the whiskey capital of the world in the 1800s. In 1829, the
well-known whiskey company Tullamore Dew was founded by John
Jameson. Stuart McNamara, born in West Cork, created International
Irish Whiskey Day because he believed that people didn't recognize
and appreciate Irish whiskey enough. He wanted people to know
about the origins of Irish whiskey and how it was traditionally
made. This traditional method is what gives it the exceptional
taste that is loved by whiskey lovers all over the world. On Sale

March 3: World Wildlife Day: -- What do
the orangutans of Borneo, the elephants of Sumatra, and the Black
Rhino all have in common? Aside from all being totally cool
animals that we watch on YouTube, the more sobering truth about
these creatures is that they're all critically endangered species.
But on World Wildlife Day, the UN and its partners are planning to
raise awareness of the gravity of this dire situation. An animal
is only placed on the critically endangered species list if the
International Union for Conservation of Nature believes the animal
faces a very high risk for extinction - extinction as in going the
way of the dinosaurs and dodo. So what does critically endangered
look like? Current estimates put the number of living Black Rhinos
at around 2,500 in the entire world. Russia's Amur Leopard, found
in the far eastern recesses of the country, is on the verge of
extinction, with only about 40 left in the world. Unfortunately,
this list goes on and on. To raise awareness of endangered species
and what we all can do, the UN is celebrating World Wildlife Day
on March 3, marking the day the group signed the Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

March 3: Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race
Day: - Simply referred to as The Iditarod, it's a popular annual
long-distance sled dog race that travels from Anchorage to Nome,
all within the American state of Alaska. The race has mushers and
a team of between 12 and 14 dogs that must cover the distance in
eight to 15 days or more. The Iditarod was established in 1973,
starting as an event to test the best sled dog mushers and teams
and becoming a highly competitive race over time. This is a
long-distance sled dog race where teams usually race through
blizzards causing whiteout conditions and sub-zero temperatures.
Gale-force winds can cause the wind chill to reach -100 _F. There
is a ceremonial start that takes place in the city of Anchorage.
Then there is an official restart in Willow, a city located about
80 miles north of Anchorage. Up to 2007, the restart took place in
Wasilla, but later, in 2008, it moved to Willow due to less snow.
The Iditarod trail runs from Willow up the Rainy Pass of the
Alaska Range. It goes into the sparsely populated interior. The
trail continues along the shore of the Bering Sea and reaches Nome
in western Alaska. The Iditarod trail goes through a rugged
landscape of tundra and spruce forests, over hills and mountain
passes. It also goes across rivers and over sea ice. The start in
Anchorage takes place in the middle of a large urban center. The
route, however, passes through widely separated villages and
towns. The Iditarod is considered a symbolic link to the early
history of Alaska. It is connected to many traditions that
commemorate the legacy of dog mushing, and the race is an
important and popular sporting event to people. The top mushers
and their teams of dogs are considered local celebrities in the
state. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

March 3: The Peach Blossom Festival
(China): -- Originating in Hunan China, Peach Blossom Day
celebrates as peach trees - in both Japan and China - blossom
during this time. Both the Peach Blossom festival of China and The
Peach Festival of Japan (Hinamatsuri, see below) celebrate peach
blossoms (though Hinamatsuri celebrates Hina dolls particularly),
and both festivals celebrate what they believe the peach blossom
represents: women. Since we love any day that celebrates the women
of the world, we absolutely adore Peach Blossom Day! The peach
blossoms come from the peach tree, which is native to China.
Historians and archaeologists think this plant has been around for
more than 2,500 years. They've found literature and text that
mentions peaches and even little fossilized peach stones as
evidence of this fact. There is also evidence to show that the
Chinese particularly revered the flowers of the peach tree, as
peach blossoms were a part of most major celebrations. The Chinese
believed (and still do) that peach blossoms can ward off evil
spirits and increase vitality in a person. Soldiers walked before
Emperors, carrying peach blossoms, and people all over the country
would hang peach blossoms on their front door to kick off the New
Year. Persia had a big role to play in the spread of this plant to
other regions. In fact, the Latin name, 'Prunus persica,', which
translates to 'Present from Persia,' refers to when Persians
introduced this fruit to the Romans. When Alexander the Great
conquered Persia in 334 B.C., he took the seeds of this plant to
Europe, and soon, explorers were taking the peach all over the
world. By the 16th century, the peach came to the U.S. via Spanish
explorers. From there, it traveled to England, becoming a rare and
prized delicacy. Colonists began domesticating the peach tree in
America, and by the 1800s, peaches were being commercially grown
in the U.S. The first peaches grown for sale were by farmers in
Maryland, Delaware, Georgia, and Virginia. Today, the peach
blossom has found a place in popular culture, appearing in art,
paintings, and even folk tales. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

March 3: The Japan Dolls Festival
(Hinamatsuri, The Doll Festival, Momo No Sekku [The Peach
Festival]) (Japan): -- A traditional and unique celebration
originating from Japan. While customs differ depending on the
region of Japan you are in, one thing in common: the main reason
this festival is held is to celebrate female children. Flower
blossoms from the peach tree are seen as harbingers of spring;
they ward off evil spirits, too, and these are some reasons they
are essential to this festival. People also get together to pray
for female kids' continued health and happiness, and set up cute
dolls, adorn houses, and of course, prepare festive food. Modern
celebrations have evolved to include honoring women of all ages.
Check out what else they do to celebrate this fun day below. On
Hinamatsuri, Japanese families pray for the health, happiness, and
prosperity of their young daughters. It is one of Japan's five
seasonal festivities or sekku. Day one of the first month, day
three of the third month, day five of the fifth month, and so on,
are all sekku celebrations. Hinamatsuri, the third sekku festival,
is held every year on March 3. Many Japanese holidays and
traditions may be dated back thousands of years, and Hinamatsuri
is no exception. It was originally called the Peach Festival since
it took place while the peach trees were in full bloom. Dolls have
always been a big aspect of Hinamatsuri, and they're still a big
deal even now. This started in the Heian Period (794 to 1185) when
people held a similar event to pray for good fortune. People would
put straw/paper dolls on rafts and push them down the river,
believing that the dolls would drive off evil spirits or
calamities. People began displaying these dolls in their homes
during the Edo Period (1603 to 1868). During the 1600s in Japan,
when Princess Okiko, daughter of the Emperor Go-Mizuno, decided to
play with a doll display created specifically for her, the custom
evolved into presenting the dolls on platforms draped with a
crimson-colored fabric. Empress Meisho promoted Hinamatsuri when
she ascended to the throne in 1687. Craftsmen all around Japan
have been making Hina dolls for the event since then, and the
tradition remains today. Hinamatsuri was abandoned in favor of new
holidays that concentrated on the emperor's imagined connection
with the people during the Meiji period when Japan started to
modernize and the emperor was reinstated to power, but it was
eventually reintroduced. It symbolized Japanese goals and values
by emphasizing marriage and families, and because the dolls were
thought to symbolize the emperor and empress. It also instilled
respect and appreciation for the throne. The Japanese diaspora
carried the holiday to other countries, but it is still limited to
immigrant Japanese groups and their descendants. Families arrange
events at their homes in the period preceding March 3 to show off
their displays. Traditional Japanese festivals, on the other hand,
are generally large public gatherings with marches, dances,
fireworks, street traders, artwork, and other forms of
entertainment. Even though Hinamatsuri is generally observed in
one's home with intimate friends and family, there are still
traditional events held throughout the country. The most famous
part of this festival is the dolls, of course. The clothes are
modeled on the Heian period and can be intricate or simple. In the
early ages, as these dolls became popular, doll makers would
create more and more intricate designs, some of which were quite
valuable and expensive. And so, tiers were added to put the
pricier dolls out of children's reach. The display of dolls
evolved and became more elaborate. Today, this festival is
celebrated by Japanese people everywhere. Little girls are
encouraged to hold parties in the days leading up to the festival,
gorging on festive sweets and foods. Households with girls display
their dolls, and peach blossoms feature prominently in the decor.
More and more households have now expanded tradition to celebrate
all women. Once the festival is over, however, the dolls are
packed away until the next year. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

March 3: World Hearing Day (International
Ear Care Day ): -- An annual observeance to raise public awareness
about how to avoid deafness and hearing impairment, as well as to
support ear and hearing care around the world. The World Health
Organization (WHO) chooses the theme each year. WHO seeks to
demonstrate the need for early detection and treatment for hearing
loss on World Hearing Day. Many people have undiagnosed hearing
problems, and are unaware that they are missing out on important
sounds and phrases. The first step in dealing with the problem is
to assess one's hearing. World Hearing Day is an annual campaign
organized by the World Health Organization's Office for the
Prevention of Blindness and Deafness. There are events taking
place throughout the world, including one on March 3, at the World
Health Organization. The campaign's goals are to disseminate
information and encourage people to take steps to avoid hearing
loss and enhance hearing care. The holiday was celebrated for the
first time in 2007. Before 2016, it was called International Ear
Care Day. WHO chooses a subject each year and prepares
instructional materials and makes them publicly available in a
variety of languages. It also plans and reports on events all
across the world. Deaf persons who can communicate using Hand
Signals are proud of their heritage. In 1816, deaf educator
Laurent Clerc and American educator Thomas H. Gallaudet helped
establish the country's first permanent institution for deaf
students. The late 1850s saw a debate held in the west regarding
whether to establish a separate deaf state. The concept was
inspired by an event in which the American Congress handed the
American Asylum a small section of Alabama. The deaf state was to
be a place where deaf persons could move to and flourish if they
so desired, but the plan failed, and the argument died with it.
The very first World Report on Hearing was released in 2021 to
commemorate World Hearing Day. WHO hopes to reach out to national
governments, global N.G.O.s, and development organizations, along
with players in the hearing care sector, to raise awareness and
organize action through the global release of the report. The
World Report on Hearing and World Hearing Day presents a global
call to action to alleviate hearing loss and ear illnesses. On

March 3: National Anthem Day (United
States): March 3, 1931: President Herbert Hoover signs the U.S.
Congress' resolution to make "The Star-Spangled Banner"
the national anthem of the United States of America. Nearly 117
years passed since Key penned his poem, "Defence of Fort
M'Henry", later set to the music of "The Anacreontic
Song", the official song of the Anacreontic Society, an
18th-century gentlemen's club of amateur musicians in London, that
"The Star-Spangled Banner" became America's national
anthem. "Hail Columbia" and "My Country' Tis of
Thee" held honorary places as patriotic songs, but neither
were an officially declared anthem of America. The story behind
"The Star-Spangled Banner" is as moving as the anthem
itself. While an attorney, Key was serving in the Georgetown Light
Field Artillery during the War of 1812. In 1814, his negotiation
skills as a lawyer were called upon to release Dr. William Beane,
a prisoner on the British naval ship, Tonnant. Early in September,
Key traveled to Baltimore in the company of Colonel John Skinner
to begin negotiations. While Key and Skinner secured Beane's
release, the British navy had begun The Battle Of Baltimore
(September 12-15, 1814). The trio waited at sea to return to
Georgetown. Fort McHenry is built on a peninsula of the Patapsco
River. Just across the Northwest Branch is the city of Baltimore.
In 1814, the population of Baltimore was roughly 50,000 people,
hardly the metropolis it is today. The country itself was still
young, and often families of soldiers lived nearby, providing
support to their soldiers. The British navy abandoned Baltimore
and turned their full attention to Fort McHenry on September 13th.
As the 190-pound shells began to shake the fort, mother nature
brought a storm of her own. Thunder and rain pelted the shore
along with the bombs and shells. Throughout the night, parents,
wives, and children in their homes could hear and feel the bomb
blasts across the way. There were reports of the explosions being
felt as far away as Philadelphia. It was a long night of fear,
worry, and providing comfort to one another. At sea, Key had a
similar night. Being a religious man, one who believed the war
could have been avoided, he watched the bombs bursting in air over
the water and steadily pummeling Fort McHenry. It was undoubtedly
a sight to behold. For 25 hours, the star-shaped fort manned by
approximately 1,000 American soldiers endured over 1,500 cannon
shots. The Fort answered with their own with almost no effect. In
the early morning of September 14th, after Major George
Armistead's troops stopped the British landing party in a blaze of
gunfire, the major ordered the oversized American flag raised in
all its glory over Fort McHenry. Sewn a few months before by Mary
Pickersgill and her daughter, the enormous banner replaced the
storm flag, which had flown during battle. As Key waited at sea
for dawn to break and smoke to clear, imagine the inspiring sight
in the silence of the morning to see his country's flag fully
unfurled against the breaking of the day and the fort standing
firm. Key was so moved by the experience he immediately began
penning the lyrics to a song that day, September 14, 1814, which
were later published by his brother-in-law as a poem titled
"Defence of Fort M'Henry." So sing the Star-Spangled
Banner. Fly the American flag. Visit Fort McHenry in Maryland.

March 3: Navy Reserves Birthday: -- March
3, 1915: #BOTD: #HBD! The United States Navy Reserve is
established. Because Naval Reserve Birthday is not a federal
holiday, people and businesses go about their daily lives on this
day. However, the birthday is typically observed at various Navy
Reserve units, the Reserve Headquarters, and the Navy Memorial in
Washington, D.C. The Navy Reserve program allows citizens to serve
in the Navy part-time with full training close to their homes
until deployment. Reservists are members of the Navy Reserve.
According to historians, there are two main periods in United
States Navy history: the "Old Navy" and the "New
Navy." The Old Navy period began on October 13, 1775, with
the establishment of the Continental Navy by the Second
Continental Congress. This Naval Force served in the American
Revolutionary War before being disbanded in 1785. However, in
response to North African pirates disrupting American sea trades,
Congress passed the Naval Act of 1794, establishing a permanent
standing U.S. Navy. The Navy was involved in the Quasi-War (1798
-1799), the First and Second Barbary Wars, the War of 1812, the
Mexican-American War of 1846, and the American Civil War. The U.S.
Navy also assisted in the fight against piracy in the
Mediterranean and Caribbean seas, as well as the slave trade off
the coast of West Africa. To deal with the growing number of
outdated ship designs, Congress approved the construction of new
modern battleships and cruisers in the 1880s. By 1870, America had
risen from twelfth to fifth in the world in terms of naval fleet
size. They surpassed the British Royal Navy in terms of uniformed
men and women and capital ship size during the 1920s and 1930s.
This expansion lasted until the outbreak of the Second World War
in 1941. The Navy became the world's undisputed naval superpower
following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990-1991. On March
3, 1915, Congress passed legislation to establish the Federal Navy
Reserve. On April 6, 1917, it was renamed the U.S. Naval Reserve
Force. The Naval Reserve Force joined WWI with about 8,000
sailors, growing to 250,000 reservists by the end of the war. The
Reserve served during WWII, making up 84% of the United States
Navy's fighting force. They also served in major armed conflicts,
such as the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the first Gulf War, and the
contingencies in Bosnia and Kosovo. In 2005, the Naval Reserve
Force was renamed to Navy Reserve. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

March 3: Missouri Compromise Day: --
March 3, 1820: The History Of The United States: United States
Expansionism: Origins Of The American Civil War: The Missouri
Compromise (The Compromise Of 1820): -- The Missouri Compromise,
United States federal legislation that balanced desires of
northern states to prevent expansion of slavery in the country
with those of southern states to expand it, is passed by The 16th
United States Congress and became law when President James Monroe
signed it on March 6, 1820. It admitted Missouri as a slave state
and Maine as a free state and declared a policy of prohibiting
slavery in the remaining Louisiana Purchase lands north of the
36dg 30min parallel. Earlier, in February 1819, Representative
James Tallmadge Jr., a Democratic-Republican (Jeffersonian
Republican) from New York, had submitted two amendments to
Missouri's request for statehood that included restrictions on
slavery. Southerners objected to any bill that imposed federal
restrictions on slavery and believed that it was a state issue, as
settled by the Constitution. However, with the Senate evenly split
at the opening of the debates, both sections possessing 11 states,
the admission of Missouri as a slave state would give the South an
advantage. Northern critics including Federalists and
Democratic-Republicans objected to the expansion of slavery into
the Louisiana Purchase territory on the Constitutional
inequalities of the three-fifths rule, which conferred Southern
representation in the federal government derived from a state's
slave population. Jeffersonian Republicans in the North ardently
maintained that a strict interpretation of the Constitution
required that Congress act to limit the spread of slavery on
egalitarian grounds. "[Northern] Republicans rooted their
antislavery arguments, not on expediency, but in egalitarian
morality." "The Constitution [said northern
Jeffersonians], strictly interpreted, gave the sons of the
founding generation the legal tools to hasten [the] removal [of
slavery], including the refusal to admit additional slave states."
When free-soil Maine offered its petition for statehood, the
Senate quickly linked the Maine and Missouri bills, making Maine
admission a condition for Missouri entering the Union as a slave
state. Senator Jesse B. Thomas of Illinois added a compromise
proviso that excluded slavery from all remaining lands of the
Louisiana Purchase north of the 36dg 30min parallel. The combined
measures passed the Senate, only to be voted down in the House by
Northern representatives who held out for a free Missouri. Speaker
of the House Henry Clay of Kentucky, in a desperate bid to break
the deadlock, divided the Senate bills. Clay and his
pro-compromise allies succeeded in pressuring half of the
anti-restrictionist Southerners in the House to submit to the
passage of the Thomas proviso and maneuvered a number of
restrictionist northerners in the House to acquiesce in supporting
Missouri as a slave state. While the Missouri question in the 15th
Congress ended in stalemate on March 4, 1819, with the House
sustaining its northern anti-slavery position and the Senate
blocking a state that restricted slavery, it succeeded in the 16th
Congress. The Missouri Compromise was very controversial, and many
worried that the country had become lawfully divided along
sectarian lines. The Kansas-Nebraska Act effectively repealed the
bill in 1854, and the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional
in Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857), both of which increased tensions
over slavery and contributed to the American Civil War. The
compromise both delayed the Civil War and sowed its seeds; Thomas
Jefferson writing contemporaneously predicted the line it had
drawn would someday tear the Union apart. 40 years later, the
North and South would split closely along the 36_30' parallel and
fight for four bloody years. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

performance, and it remains to this day, the oldest surviving
stage set still in existence. The theatre was virtually abandoned
after only a few productions. The scenes, which had been created
in wood and stucco for Oedipus Rex, and which were meant to
represent the streets of Thebes, were never removed: despite
bombings and other vicissitudes, they have miraculously preserved
into modern times. The original lighting system of glass oil
lamps, designed by Scamozzi, heightened the illusion of space, has
been used only a few times because of the high cost and the risk
of fire. Scamozzi's lighting system was used when, in 1997, the
theatre was again employed for a production of Oedipus Rex. The
full Roman-style scaenae frons back screen (the elaborately
decorated permanent architectural background across a Roman
theatre stage) is made from wood and stucco imitating marble. It
was the home of the Accademia Olimpica, which was founded there in
1555. The Teatro Olimpico was constructed between 1580-1585, the
final design by the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio,
which was not completed until after his death. The Teatro Olimpico
is, along with the Teatro all'antica in Sabbioneta and the Teatro
Farnese in Parma, one of only three Renaissance theatres remaining
in existence. Both these theatres were based, in large measure, on
the Teatro Olimpico. It is still used several times a year. Since
1994 the Teatro Olimpico, together with other Palladian buildings
in and around Vicenza, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage
Site "City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the
Veneto". On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

(The Battle of Nassau): -- The first amphibious landing of the
United States Marine Corps begins The Raid Of Nassau (March 3-4,
1776), a naval operation and amphibious assault by Colonial forces
against the British port of Nassau, Bahamas, during the American
Revolutionary War. The battle is considered one of the first
engagements of the newly established Continental Navy and the
Continental Marines, the respective progenitors of the United
States Navy and Marine Corps. The action was also the marines'
first amphibious landing. It is sometimes known as the "Battle
of Nassau". Departing from Cape Henlopen, Delaware on
February 17, 1776, the fleet arrived in the Bahamas on March 1,
with the objective of seizing gunpowder and munitions known to be
stored there. Two days later the marines came ashore seizing Fort
Montagu at the eastern end of the Nassau harbor, but did not
advance to the town where the gunpowder was stored. That night
Nassau's governor had most of the gunpowder loaded aboard ships
sailing for St. Augustine. On March 4, the Continental Marines
advanced and took control of the poorly defended town. The
Continental forces remained at Nassau for two weeks and took away
all the remaining gunpowder and munitions found. The fleet
returned to New London, Connecticut in early April after capturing
a few British supply ships, but failed to capture HMS Glasgow in
an action on April 6. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

the company town of Pullman, Chicago for his workers (d. October
19, 1897) is #born George Mortimer Pullman in Brocton, New York.
He improved railroad sleeping accommodations, developing the
folding upper berth and lower berth designs. His company went on
to become the biggest railroad car building organization in the
world. His Pullman Company also hired African American men to
staff the Pullman cars, who became known and widely respected as
Pullman porters, providing elite service. While this gave Pullman
a place of honor in African American history, he nevertheless
lowered wages and required workers to spend longer hours at his
plant without lowering the prices of rents and goods in his
company town after a downturn in demand for his products in 1894.
He gained presidential support by Grover Cleveland for the use of
federal military troops which left 30 strikers dead in the violent
suppression of workers there to end the Pullman Strike of 1894. A
national commission was appointed to investigate the strike, which
included assessment of operations of the company town. In 1898 the
Supreme Court of Illinois ordered the Pullman Company to divest
itself of the town which became a neighborhood of the city of
Chicago. George Pullman died of a heart attack in Chicago,

Graham Bell, Scottish-American engineer, academic, scientist,
inventor and innovator who is credited with patenting the first
practical telephone (d. August 2, 1922) was #born Alexander Bell
in Edinburgh, Scotland. Alexander Graham Bell founded the American
Telephone and Telegraph Company (ATT) in 1885. Bell's father,
grandfather, and brother had all been associated with work on
elocution and speech and both his mother and wife were deaf,
profoundly influencing Bell's life's work. His research on hearing
and speech further led him to experiment with hearing devices
which eventually culminated in Bell being awarded the first U.S.
patent for the telephone in 1876. Bell developed an interest in
the vibrating membrane as a method of electrically transmitting
sounds. His very first sentence spoken on the newly invented
telephone on March 10, 1876, was to his assistant, "Mister
Watson, come here, I want you." Bell considered his invention
an intrusion on his real work as a scientist and refused to have a
telephone in his study. Many other inventions marked Bell's later
life, including groundbreaking work in optical telecommunications,
hydrofoils, and aeronautics. Although Bell was not one of the 33
founders of the National Geographic Society, he had a strong
influence on the magazine while serving as the second president
from January 7, 1898, until 1903. Bell died of complications from
diabetes at his private estate, Beinn Bhreagh, in Cape Breton,
Nova Scotia, ageed 75. While tending to him, his wife Mabel
whispered, "Don't leave me."; Bell signed "no...",
lost consciousness, and died shortly thereafter. Bell's coffin was
constructed of Beinn Bhreagh pine by his laboratory staff, lined
with the same red silk fabric used in his tetrahedral kite
experiments. To help celebrate his life, his wife asked guests not
to wear black (the traditional funeral color) while attending his
service, during which soloist Jean MacDonald sang a verse of
Robert Louis Stevenson's "Requiem": -- ========= Under a
wide and starry sky, | Dig the grave and let me lie. | Glad did I
live and gladly die | And I laid me down with a will. =========
Upon the conclusion of Bell's funeral, for one minute at 6:25 p.m.
Eastern Time, "every phone on the continent of North America
was silenced in honor of the man who had given to mankind the
means for direct communication at a distance". Alexander
Graham Bell was buried atop Beinn Bhreagh mountain, on his estate
where he had resided increasingly for the last 35 years of his
life, overlooking Bras D'Or Lake. He was survived by his wife

"All American" Airborne Division, leading it in action
in Sicily, Italy and Normandy, commander of the XVIII Airborne
Corps in August 1944 during The Battle Of The Bulge, Operation
Varsity and the Western Allied invasion of Germany, most famous
for resurrecting the United Nations (UN) war effort during the
Korean War as the commander of the Eighth United States Army
(1950-1951), and after Douglas MacArthur's removal from the posts
in 1951, commander of the United Nations Command of all United
Nations forces in Korea and military governor of Japan (Supreme
Commander For The Allied Powers {SCAP}), Supreme Allied Commander
Europe (1952-1953), 19th Chief Of Staff Of The United States Army
(1953-1955) (d. July 26, 1993) is #born Matthew Bunker Ridgway in
Fort Monroe, Virginia. His father was Colonel Thomas Ridgway, an
artillery officer, and Ruth Starbuck (Bunker) Ridgway. He lived in
various military bases all throughout his childhood, and later
remarked that his "earliest memories are of guns and marching
men, of rising to the sound of the reveille gun and lying down to
sleep at night while the sweet, sad notes of 'Taps' brought the
day officially to an end." He graduated in 1912 from English
High School in Boston and applied to United States Military
Academy at West Point because he thought that would please his
father (who was a West Point graduate). As the popular commanding
general in Korea, Ridgway gained the nickname "Tin Tits"
for his habit of wearing hand grenades attached to his
load-bearing equipment at chest level. Photographs however show he
only wore one grenade on one side of his chest; the so-called
"grenade" on the other side was in fact a first-aid
packet. Several historians have credited Ridgway for turning the
war around in favor of the UN side. His long military career was
recognized by the award of the Presidential Medal Of Freedom on
May 12, 1986 by President Ronald Reagan, who stated that: "Heroes
come when they're needed; great men step forward when courage
seems in short supply." Matthew Ridgway died at his suburban
Pittsburgh home of cardiac arrest, at the age of 98. He is buried
at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia.] In a
graveside eulogy, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Of Staff, General
Colin Powell, said: "No soldier ever performed his duty
better than this man. No soldier ever upheld his honor better than
this man. No soldier ever loved his country more than this man
did. Every American soldier owes a debt to this great man." .

and the "Platinum Blonde", she was popular for her
"Laughing Vamp" screen persona. Harlow was in the film
industry for only nine years, but she became one of the biggest
movie stars in Hollywood, whose image in the public eye has
endured. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Harlow No. 22
on their greatest female stars of Classic Hollywood Cinema list.
Harlow was first signed by business magnate Howard Hughes, who
directed her first major role in Hell's Angels (1930). After a
series of critically unsuccessful films, and Hughes's losing
interest in her career, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer bought out Harlow's
contract in 1932 and cast her in leading roles in a string of hits
built on her comedic talent: Red-Headed Woman (1932), Red Dust
(1932), Dinner at Eight (1933), Reckless (1935) and Suzy (1936).
Harlow's popularity rivaled and then surpassed that of MGM's top
leading ladies Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. She died at the
age of 26, of kidney failure during filming of Saratoga. Jean
Harlow died at the age of 26 of kidney failure in Los Angeles,
California during filming of Saratoga. She is buried at Forest
Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California.

present political organization of society, from which women are

attention that it attracted were monumental in advancing women's

The United States: Recording Sessions: African-American Music:
Jazz: The History Of Jazz: -- Cab Calloway And His Orchestra first
records the jazz-scat song "Minnie The Moocher";
teleased by Brunswick Records,it has been argued that the record
was the first jazz record to sell a million copies, and it was the
biggest chart-topper of 1931. "Minnie The Moocher" is
most famous for its nonsensical ad libbed ("scat")
lyrics (for example, "Hi De Hi De Hi De Ho"). In
performances, Calloway would have the audience and the band
members participate by repeating each scat phrase in a form of
call and response, eventually making it too fast and complicated
for the audience to replicate. Calloway publicized and then
celebrated a "12th birthday" for the song on June 17,
1943, while performing at New York's Strand Theatre. He reported
that he was then singing the song at both beginning and end of
four performances daily, and then estimated his total performances
to date: "she's kicked the gong around for me more than
40,000 times." In 1978, Calloway recorded a disco version of
"Minnie The Moocher" on RCA Records which reached No. 91
on the Billboard R & B chart. "Minnie The Moocher"
was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and in 2019 was
selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry as

COINTELPRO: COINTELPRO-BLACK HATE: The March 3, 1968 COINTELPRO
Memorandum: -- A memorandum is sent by the FBI to its field
offices regarding COINTELPRO-BLACK HATE, the agency's covered
operations program devised during the urban unrest of July-August
1967 known as The Long, Hot Summer Of 1967 (a period which ran
concurrent with the so-called Summer Of Love), a program focused
on Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference (SCLC), as well as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating
Committee (SNCC), the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), the
Deacons For Defense And Justice, The Congress Of Racial Equality
(CORE), and the Nation Of Islam (BLACK HATE established the Ghetto
Informant Program and instructed 23 FBI offices to "disrupt,
misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize the activities of
black nationalist hate type organizations"). Asserting that
black unity was the "first step toward a Mau-Mau-style
uprising" in the United States and the beginning of an "Black
Revolution", the March 3, 1968 memorandum defined the
program's goals to include "prevent the coalition of militant
black nationalist groups"; to "Prevent the RISE OF A
'MESSIAH' who could unify ... the militant black nationalist
movement"; "to pinpoint potential troublemakers and
neutralize them before they exercise their potential for violence
[against authorities]"; to "Prevent militant black
nationalist groups and leaders from gaining RESPECTABILITY, by
discrediting them to ... both the responsible community and to
liberals who have vestiges of sympathy"; and to "prevent
the long-range GROWTH of militant black organizations, especially
among youth". The non-violent Dr. King was said to have
potential to be the "messiah" figure should he abandon
nonviolence and integrationism, and the militant black power
vision of Kwame Ture (the former Stokely Carmichael) was noted to
have "the necessary charisma to be a real threat in this
way". While the FBI was particularly concerned with leaders
and organizers, they did not limit their scope of target to the
heads of organizations. Individuals such as writers were also
listed among the targets of operations. COINTELPRO-BLACK HATE
coincided with a broader federal effort to prepare military
responses for urban riots and began increased collaboration
between the FBI, Central Intelligence Agency, National Security
Agency, and the Department of Defense. The CIA launched its own
domestic espionage project in 1967 called Operation CHAOS. A
particular target was the Poor People's Campaign, a national
effort organized by King and the SCLC to occupy Washington, DC.
The FBI monitored and disrupted the campaign on a national level,
while using targeted smear tactics locally to undermine support
for the march. The Black Panther Party was another targeted
organization, wherein the FBI collaborated to destroy the party
from the inside out. Overall, COINTELPRO encompassed disruption
and sabotage of the Socialist Workers Party (1961), the Ku Klux
Klan (1964), the Nation of Islam, the Black Panther Party (1967),
and the entire New Left social/political movement, which included
antiwar, community, and religious groups (1968). A later
investigation by the Senate's Church Committee (see below) stated
that "COINTELPRO began in 1956, in part because of
frustration with Supreme Court rulings limiting the Government's
power to proceed overtly against dissident groups." Official
congressional committees and several court cases have concluded
that COINTELPRO operations against communist and socialist groups
exceeded statutory limits on FBI activity and violated
constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech and association. On
